I used to feel so alone in the city. All those gazillions of people and then me, on the outside. Because how do you meet a new person? I was very stumped by this for many years. And then I realized, you just say “Hi.” They may ignore you. Or you may marry them. And that possibility is worth that one word.

Do you ever wonder whether people would like you more or less if they could see inside you? … but I always wonder about that. If people could see me the way I see myself - if they could live in my memories - would anyone, anyone, love me?

If I were to be totally sincere, I would say that I do not know why I live and why I do not stop living. The answer probably lies in the irrational character of life which maintains itself without reason.

Why is your worth decided at school by how many friends you have? I’d rather be left alone with a good book than sit with a crowd of people. Unfortunately, instead of reading about something I’m genuinely interested in, I have no choice but to listen to conversations I don’t care about for 6 hours until finally I get to go home.

Two men stand in a glass tower. Through the transparent walls they watch crowds of people writhe beneath them like ants. From such a height neither of them can make out their faces. Both stare, seemingly transfixed. One turns to the other and asks:

What are they doing?

The second replies:

They’re all desperately trying to be happy.
